The 0th Place: Utilizing Urban Cracks as Experimental Sites

My thesis project – The 0th Place: Utilizing Urban Cracks as Experimental Sites – represents a reinterpretation of urban environments. In contrast to traditional top-down zoning and bottom-up social approaches, this project tries to understand the “in-between” scale. This scale includes spaces that do not fit neatly into typical urban design categories like neighborhoods or architectural plots. These spaces, often referred to as “left-over” (urban cracks), offer untapped potential for exploration. This project positions itself at the intersection of urbanism and architecture, focusing on these overlooked spaces.

Rotterdam: From Pre-War Identity to Post-War Transformation

Quantitative Analysis: Identifying Neglected Urban Spaces through Space Syntax

Mixed Approach: Density-Based Analysis for Urban Typology and Opportunity Mapping

Urban Configurations: Density and Function-Based Typology

The process analyzed urban configurations, aligned them with challenges and trends, and identified 28 interdependencies across C1 to C8, addressing issues like social inclusivity, economic growth, and green infrastructure.

Selection Criteria: Identifying transition zones, social/economic disparities, connectivity issues, and development potential (Step 1 of 8-Step Design Framework)

The “0th place” is a theoretical social space that resets place identity, evolving over time to adapt to various uses and foster encounters, challenging traditional concepts of the 1st place (home), 2nd place (work or school), and 3rd place (public gathering spaces).
