The Niet-Lijnbaan: Transforming Rotterdam’s Lijnbaan

The Niet-lijnbaan project redefines the Lijnbaan by integrating principles of People, Planet, and Prosperity to address spatial and environmental challenges. It aims to create a more comfortable and vibrant area, focusing on inclusivity, sustainability, and adaptability, while incorporating “fun” as a key design element to foster active and welcoming public spaces.

Lijnbaan as Rotterdam’s Spine: Connecting Urban Design and Identity

Key Objectives

The project focuses on improving walkability, enhancing biodiversity, and promoting sustainability. It addresses existing issues such as the area’s uncomfortable microclimate and rigid linearity. To preserve Lijnbaan’s cultural heritage, the design integrates historical elements while introducing flexible, multifunctional spaces that adapt to modern needs.

The Maquette as a Catalyst for Operative Design

Design Strategies

The plan incorporates slow and fast circulation paths, redefines edges to create new enclosures, and mitigates linearity with facade shifts. New functions are introduced to open spaces, and “fuzzy facades” blend public and private zones. Blue-green infrastructure, including a connected water system and shaded pathways, improves the microclimate and urban experience. Light-colored, sustainable materials are used for urban furniture and landscape elements, while densification and space reallocation optimize land use.
